Subject: Bike Shops Should be Considered Essential Businesses
Text for Email:
Dear Governor Ned Lamont.
Thank you for your leadership, focus, and long hours by you and your staff to lead the response of Connecticut to COVID-19.
I am writing to encourage the inclusion of bicycle shops (sales and services) as among businesses that are considered essential. Recently, the state of Illinois included bike shops along with auto repair garages as essential businesses. I encourage Connecticut to follow that lead. In many communities in Connecticut, bicycle shops are a key transportation resource for people who use bicycles as a means of transportation. Also, it is being reported that across the country, bicycle usage is increasing dramatically as people took to practice social distancing by not using public transportation. In addition, transportation insecurity in many neighborhoods correlates with negative health outcomes along with poverty and lack of accessible health insurance.
Bike shops are able to responsibly practice social distancing while helping patrons move outside, get needed and healthy exercise, and contribute to a better environment.
I urge you to include bike shops as essential businesses.
